If you are looking for tips on how to motivate yourself when you don’t feel like it you have come to the right place!
Here is some sage advice for those days when “you don’t feel like it.”
Today I am going to talk about the statement “I’ll do XXXX when I feel like it.”
Or importantly, anything that includes the words “I don’t feel like it” in the sentence.
I’m sure you may have breathed the statement a few times yourself.
I don’t feel like exercising.
I don’t feel like doing my taxes this week.
I don’t feel like going there.
I don’t feel like doing that.
Do I need to tell you that these are the most frustrating, self-sabotaging words a person can say out loud?
My answer to this response is this:
DO IT ANYWAY, EVEN IF YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE DOING IT!
Here’s the cold, hard truth.
No one seriously wakes up in the morning and jumps out of bed, super excited to go for a run (okay maybe there are a few that fall into this category but they are a rare breed and I personally don’t know any of them).
No one also wakes up and can’t wait to get to work (even me and I’ve had some of the coolest jobs on the planet in the past like managing recording studios where I got to rub shoulders with celebrities).
We might not MIND going to work but if given a choice we would all prefer to have a sleep in or day off, where we could go and do fun things with our friends.
So knowing this, the next thing you need to understand is that there are no medals given out for good intentions.
No one wants to know that you were planning to donate $500 to a charity (but didn’t).
No one cares that you were hoping to kick-start a new great business idea (but were too lazy to take action.)
The accolades and rewards – they arrive AFTER YOU HAVE TAKE ACTION.
YOU GET NOTHING FOR DOING NOTHING.
Here’s the deal:
You need to get up off your bottom EVEN IF YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT and do what needs to be done.
The secret to motivation is ignoring your FEELINGS and focusing on your purpose.
What needs to be done? What do you need to tick off your to-do list today?
Then get up and do it. Grumble all the way if you like; whinge and whine about how doing the task sucks but don’t let that stop you from taking action.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like doing something.
The secret to success is acceptance that this “blah” feeling may never change.
Maybe it will be minimized if you are lucky but I say: be prepared for the worst and hope for the best!
People succeed only when they do the things that nobody else wants to do.
Stay focused on your end goal.
Get up and take action, no matter how you are FEELING about it.
You will feel so proud of yourself ONLY AFTER the task is done.
Don’t talk, act.
Don’t say, show.
Don’t promise, prove.
