list of countries and their capitals

list of countries and their capitals

If you are looking for a list of countries and their capitals then you have come to the right place!

This post may sound like this is a geography lesson but bear with me, there is a method to my madness.

When I was a little girl I was obsessed with exploring the world map. I wanted to learn about new countries and I tried to imagine what it would be like to live in the more remote parts of the world.

Kids are born curious about the world. What adults primarily do in the presence of kids is unwittingly thwart the curiosity of children. Neil deGrasse Tyson

Back then I taught myself the more popular capitals of the world (yes, FOR FUN but just don’t test me today because my memory seems to be permanently affected post-baby brain).

Kids nowadays are not always encouraged to act on this natural curiosity EVEN THOUGH we are now in a better position than ever before to learn more about the world around us.

So pull out a world map.

Point out different countries to your kids. Research what life is like in these other countries. Incite their curiosity to dream of far-off places and connect with the world at large.

Trust me when I say this: curiosity and determination will help your kids find the key that opens doors for them in the future.

The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it and turn it inside out.

So How Many Continents Are There In The World?

There are seven continents in the world. Here they are listed in order of size:

  1. Asia
  2. Africa
  3. North America
  4. South America
  5. Antarctica
  6. Europe
  7. Australia

How Many Countries Are There In The World Today?

The general consensus is that there are currently 195 countries in the world (but this doesn’t include Greenland, Kosovo, Taiwan or Palestine for example).

Each country has a capital city which is special and important to the country. Capitals are usually large cities but no, they are not always the largest city in the country.

The capital city is where the government of the country functions and makes its important decisions.
